Many spies listed here have become national or international heroes. They provide the world with an example of someone who can change society and their beliefs.

 

1. Ethel & Julius Rosenberg:



They are viewed as the heroes of the Cold War by some Americans. According to Susan Web of People`s Weekly World, they made a sacrifice because they believed that a better world was possible and necessary. They refused to sign the loyalty oath and to lose their jobs like many people who were deemed communists. The execution of these two individuals was a struggle US faced for democracy and peace.

 

2. Eli Cohen:



Cohen was an Israeli Spy who worked in Syria and developed close relationships with the Syrian state and military. In fact, he was the third in line to become President of Syria when he was found by the Soviets. On May 18, 1965 he was executed by Syria for being an Israeli spy. He is deamed the person who saved Israel and prevented it from being destroyed. It was because of him that Israel was able to win the 6 Day War in 1967 when it was attacked by Egypt, Jordan and Syria.

 

3. Omar Nasiri:



This man was a Moroccan spy who infiltrated al-Qaeda for Britain and France. He admitted to warning the UK intelligence about the threat of al-Qaeda in 1990s. He provided pertinent information that could have been used to prevent al-Qaeda from ascending into power and causing 9/11 and is thus considered a hero.

 

4. Klaus Fuchs:



This man was a German born physicist who spied for Soviets during and after World War II while working on the atomic bomb project and Manhattan Project in both Great Britain and United States between 1941 and 1947. He felt that the Soviet Union had the right to know what Great Britain and the United States were up to.

 

5. Sidney Reilly:



This Ukrainian born was an Ace of Spies. He is the basis of the famous James Bond films and Ian Fleming`s books. He was often able to move across borders under assumed aliases to steal secrets, plans and aircraft prototypes. He is most notably known for trying to stage a coup against the Russian Revolutionaries in 1917 and for trying to assassinate Vladimir Lenin. He was committed to bringing democracy and to eliminating threats. Sadly he was killed by an undercover OGPU agent who tricked him into thinking he was anti-communist.

 



 

6. Nathan Hale:



He was a soldier for the Continental Army during the American Revolution. He volunteered to spy on British troops and their movements during the Battle of Long Island. Unfortunately he was discovered by the British and was hanged for his crime. He is deemed a national hero in Connecticut today for his work for the America nation.

 

7. Pauline Cushman:



She was an actress who was disguised as a spy. She was an agent who was offered money to toast Jefferson Davis in a performance. After her toast, she would follow the Confederates and would also report back to the Union. She was caught with the documents in her hands for spying and sentenced to die by hanging. She was saved 3 days before the hanging. She is deemed a hero for trying to save United States from being divided.

 

8. Oleg Penkovsky:



This man is known as the Agent Hero. He caused the Cuban Missile Crisis when he supplied Americans with information about the Soviet Union in 1950s and 1960s. He may have prevented an attack that would have been deadly to Americans. Sadly, he was tried and convicted for treason and espionage and hanged.

 

9. Jan Kowalewski:



This lieutenant and colonel was a cryptologist, intelligence officer and engineer. He and other cryptologists broke Soviet military codes and ciphers and allowed for Poland to win the war between Poland and the Soviet Union in 1920. He is deemed a national hero in Poland.

 

10. Kurt Gerstein:



Gerstein was a Nazi ranking official who infiltrated his party to get to the bottom of the actions. Before the war, he was involved in anti-Nazi activities and was arrested for distributing literature to colleagues in the mining industry. When his sister-in-law died in 1941 of supposed natural causes in the Hadamar mental hospital, he decided to see to bottom of the witchpot. Joining Waffen SS, he was assigned to the medical service's hygiene section. In 1942, he was appointed head of Technical Disinfection Department. It was at this position he saw the horrors of the Holocaust. Seeing what he saw (i.e. gassing, mass murder), he would bury all Zyklon B canisters he was to deliver. He did his part to resist the Nazi. He is thus considered hero by some. At the end of the war, he shared documents he compiled with the Allies.

2011 was an eventful year on Facebook. Many users were quick to update there statuses regarding major developments and events. Some lent their support, others were opinionated about disgust, while the rest paid tribute to the best (heroes). Here is a list of 10 things people were talking about on Facebook in 2011. It expands on an article written by PC Mag on December 7, 2011 on www.pcmag.com and sites the reasons for the intrigue.

 

1. The death of Osama bin Laden:



The capture and death of bin Laden sparked great interest on the social network. PC Mag. reports that 10% of Facebook users in the English speaking world posted about the event on May 1, 2011.

 

2. Green Bay Packers defeating Pittsburg Steelers:



When the Packers won the Superbowl in February of 2011 that created great stir on Facebook. Through the use of memology, PC Mag reported this event as the second most talked about event on Facebook in 2011.

 

3. Casey Anthony Trial:



Using same method as the other 2, the magazine reported this as the 3rd most talked about story in 2011 on Facebook. Anthony was charged and tried for first degree murder of her 2 year old daughter in 2008; however, was acquitted in the end. She did face a misdemeanor for lying to police.

 

4. Charlie Sheen:



The whole fiasco with Sheen comes at #4 according to PC Mag. His ramblings, drug addictions and rampage against friends and co-workers, really got people talking. Although, his tour was sold out, they were not as popular as his troubles. Many viewers booed him and left agitated.

 

5. Steve Jobs death:



Many paid tribute to the co-founder of Apple when he passed away on October 5, 2011. He revolutionized the world of technology and was an inspirational speaker and leader who left a legacy the world still relies heavily on. He was and still is definitely missed.

 



 

6. British Royal Wedding:



People in North America woke up early in the morning to watch the coverage of the wedding. Many watched in detail how the event unfolded from the engagement to the actual wedding. Viewers online were talking as much as they were speaking about it in real life. It is thus not surprising that this event is on the list.

 

7. Death of Amy Winehouse:



Everyone knew of the troubles of Amy Winehouse. They loved the singer for her talent and knack for artistic expression. Many Facebook users were quite frustrated that Winehouse was such a talent that got wasted. Her memory may or may not live on, depending on her impact.

 

8. Call of Duty 3: Release:



The awaited release of this game was equally talked about on Facebook, especially by the adolescents and young adults who are fanatics about video gaming.

 

9. Military Operation in Libya:



Frustrations over the war in Libya were also a hot topic on Facebook. The response received by NATO crews received mixed reviews. Many users were not happy with the intervention and the consequences.

 

10. Hurricane Irene:



Irene was a large and powerful hurricane in the Atlantic region which left extensive flood and wind damage throughout the Caribbean, the US East Coast and the Atlantic Canada region in 2011. Many braced for the worst as damages accumulated to over $3.1 million USD.

When we think of punishment, spanking, grounding and taking away privileges come to mind. There are other methods parents use. This article sets out to examine these unconventional forms of punishment.

1. Savannah Hardin:



This 9 year old died after being forced to run for 3 hours without any stops. The punishment was for lying to her grandmother about candy bars. The girl was severely dehydrated and suffered a number of seizures. Both her grandmother and step mother are facing murder charges. The step mother called the police reporting a seizure and unresponsiveness.

 

2. Tomny Jordan:

He posted a video on Facebook and Youtube to make a solid point. Jordan's daughter was alleged to have posted curse words at her parents on Facebook. Her dad viewed the comment and made a video where he shot his daughter's laptop as a form of punishment. He was not happy with her suggestion to get paid to do house chores.

 

3. Pankaj Singh:



An Indian boy from New Delhi died after being punished in school. The 6 year old fell ill, stopped eating and died after being locked in a dark schoolroom for hours. The punishment was for not doing homework. Parents filed a complaint against the school to the police.

 

4. Chandler Scott Fallaw:

A school in Chicago in 2006 ordered Fallaw's mother to spank her son. He was removed from the system and was being homeschooled until the family moved.

 

5. He Liesheng:



This father forced his 4 year old son to run in the snow in just his underpants and shoes. He also took a video of it. Sparking outrage, the father told the press that he wanted his son to develop a masculine temperament. Liesheng has been nicknamed the Eagle Dad.

 



 

6. Valerine Borders:

This mother forced her son to walk 5 miles to school as punishment for his misbehaviour. The misbehaviour led to him to becone suspended from using the bus due to excessive yelling.

A mother wrote to The Citizen on February 20, 2012 citing the bullying her daughter's teacher purported. The daughter is in grade 3, the teacher uses derogatory language as a form of punishment. She would write loser on tests and even call the daughter names. The daughter is completely depressed now and hates school.

 

8. Become detached:

Many parents and teachers never utilize this method. They resort to the most gruesome methods before thinking of this. All parents need to do is pretend their children are not theirs. Children will definitely listen then.

 

9. Suffer Consequences:

The best but not always used form of punishment is having the person doing misdeeds suffer the consequences of punishment. They should have the say in dealing with the results of their own behaviour.

 

10. Occupy Protests:

US is known to use tazer guns and pepper spray as a tactic against its citizens. These are cruel and unusual punishments. Franklin Lamb, a prominent lawyer believes that punishment is given way before accusations are made.
